Your Dashboard Should Pass the 60-Second Test
Here is a simple test for any dashboard. Open it. Can you follow the story in thirty to sixty seconds? Can anyone, not just the person who built it?
If not, it is not working.
Most dashboards fail that test. They show numbers. Rows of them, in colors, with a dozen charts fighting for space. But showing numbers is not the same as answering a question. A good dashboard answers a question. Are we ahead or behind. Which location is dragging. What needs attention today. You should see the answer before you finish your coffee.
The other problem is where dashboards come from. Most are canned. Off the shelf, or built by IT, or copied from a template somebody found. They show what the software could show, not what your operation actually needs to watch. There is a difference between a dashboard that reports data and one that flags the thing about to go wrong.
An operations dashboard is built around your decisions. What does management need to catch early. What does the floor need to see every morning. What is the one number that means trouble. A template does not know that. It comes from understanding how you actually run the place.
So the numbers get tailored to the operation, not the other way around. And the layout tells a story any user can follow, whether they live in the data or open it once a week.
That is the whole point. A dashboard is not a wall of numbers. It is an answer you can read at a glance.
